
Stephens 34 years of energy sector experience includes business development, environmental technology advancement and establishing creative new collaboration groups. He spent 10 years with Shell Canada, and time in Venture Capital and oilfield services businesses. During his 22 years at Suncor Energy, Stephen was directly involved in GHG abatement, CCS technology and other sustainability efforts. He led the company into founding the Carbon Capture Project which from 2000 to 2012 invested over $70M in research on CO2 capture and storage technologies. He led teams to respond to the Alberta Specified Gas Emitters Regulation of 2007 and establish a company wide Energy Audit approach for four refineries and 2 o3 oil sands plants. Stephen was instrumental in the set up and leadership of the Integrated CO2 Network from 2006-2013 acting as Chair for this 18 company ICO2N consortium. This included leadership of Provincial and Federal Government education and advocacy on CCS. He participated in the CCS Development Council and the Regulatory Framework Assessment teams that the Government of Alberta consulted for its preparation of the $2B in funding for the CCS projects. Stephen was seconded by Suncor to the setup and launch of COSIA for a year in 2011, and remained on the Shareholders Steering Committee of COSIA until 2018 where he led the establishment of the GHG priority area. He also used his investment experience to lead Suncor into direct equity investing in outside companies and the EVOK Innovations venture fund as Suncor began to focus more on renewable energy and technology investment.
